    After activating the theme, and going to install the required plugin (TheGem Theme Elements), it says the plugin does not have a valid header.

    Please disregard.  Apparently you have to activate TheGem before installing TheGem Theme Elements.  After activating, I attempted to reinstall Theme Elements, and it worked successfully.
