I recently uploaded The Gem to my Wordpress, and made some minor changes to the theme, for example changing the background colour of the holding page. The default is a kind of cream, and I'd changed it to a very dark grey, as well as a few other minor font changes (please see attached screen shots). The holding page just has my logo and 'coming soon'.
My question is, when I recently updated the theme, the colour changed back to cream and the font changes reverted back to default. I haven't changed any template files and had only used controls within the Wordpress user interface (theme options) to change these elements. Will this happen every time the theme gets updated? Or is there a better way to go about designing my site? Yes I suspect I will customise it a bit, but had generally planned to do so from within the theme options and at page level from within the editor.
I had read something about uploading another version of the template if planning on playing with the template files, which I'm not opposed to doing if that would be best, I just didn't think I'd be modifying it enough to need it!
Any help/tutorials you could point me in the direction of would be much appreciated.
You just need to click save in the theme options after the theme update (to apply your theme options styles in the custom.css file in the new theme) In order to avoid this problem in feature you can just install child theme. Child theme in attach

Thanks, I've already installed and activated and so far all seems good. My question was to see if there is any documentation around why the need to use the child theme in the first place (as other templates I've used before just allowed me to edit a custom.css file and not need to install multiple versions of the same template just to change a colour). I'd like to read up about how the child theme works, and to find out about any further differences, so I can understand it better while using it.
