I've created a child theme so I don't mess up the parent theme files and I'm receiving the following error:
TheGem's styles cannot be customized because file "/home/content/11/11707611/html/weshipcards/wp-content/themes/thegem-child/css/custom.css" cannot be modified. Please check your server's settings. Then click "Save Changes" button.
I'm not sure if this will cause me problems moving forward. Can you please help?

This might be cause by your service permissions, make sure that .css file is 755.
